Carolina y Diego in the Press

The weekend events with Carolina Zokalski and Diego Di Falco had some great mentions in the local press this week!

It was listed as an Best Bet in the Independent Weekly.

In walking "the walk"

B Y S Y L V I A P F E I F F E N B E R G E R

Been putting off a New Year's resolution to expand your horizons, have more fun, maybe take a dance class? This weekend is a golden opportunity to take your first steps in a new direction, as Tangophilia hosts two world-renowned visiting instructors in the Argentine tango. Carolina Zokalski and Diego di Falco became the youngest tango dancers in American musical theater history when they joined the original Broadway cast of "Forever Tango" at age 20. Di Falco struck the dramatic pose for the show's billboard in Times Square, and the couple was nominated for a Tony in "Best Choreography." Since then, they have appeared in the video production of "Forever Tango" and have performed throughout North America, Europe and Japan, and they recently starred in the PBS special "Tango Magic."

Triangle Dance Studios will be the site for Di Falco and Zokalski's local workshops on Thursday, Jan. 22 and Friday, Jan. 23 teaching everything--from the most basic fundamentals of social dancing (like how to invite a partner to dance), to musicality, form, and the all-important tango "walk." Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25 build up to combinations, ganchos (tango's sexy leg kicks) and more for the intermediate dancer. Advance registration discounts and package rates available via Tangophilia's website.

If you just like to watch, Zokalski and Di Falco will perform Saturday night at Cafe Parizhade. $25 gets you dinner included in the deal, $15 gets you in to the milonga (social dance) and performance only. Call 423-7681 or visit www.tangophilia.com for information and reservations.

It was highlighted in the Life section of the News & Observer.

Tango from Broadway

Carolina Zokalski and Diego di Falco, stars of Broadway's "Forever Tango," are visiting the Triangle this week for performances and dance workshops.

The pair will perform Saturday at Cafe Parizade in Durham at 8 p.m., followed by a "milonga," or social dance. They will also teach workshops tonight through Sunday at Triangle Dance Studio, 2603 S. Miami Blvd. in Durham. Tonight's workshop, at 8, is for all levels. A milonga will follow. Saturday's workshop, from noon to 5 p.m., is intermediate, as is Sunday's, from 12:30-5:15 p.m.

For information, call 423-7681 or surf to www.tangophilia.com.

The weekend was also highlighted in the Herald-Sun. Unfortunately, they don't seem to provide those kinds of highlight articles on their web site.

Weekend of Tango in Tampa, 13-15 Feb 2004

We're going to be escorting a small group of people down to Tampa, Florida for the 7th Annual Weekend of Tango in Tampa organized by Victor Crichton. The weekend will be held 13-15 February, 2004, and will feature full sets workshops by Carolina Zokalski y Diego di Falco of Forever Tango, as well as Fernanda Ghi y Guillermo Merlo of Tango Dreams! In addition to the Friday and Saturday milongas, the weekend culminates in a huge show Sunday night at the historic Centro Asturiano in Ybor City. The evening includes a full dinner, dancing in a grand ballroom with live music, and a full show (almost 2 hours!) of dance performances, a live tango orchestra, and tango singers.

This will be our 4th visit to tango in Tampa, and our 3rd specifically for this event! We highly recommend it as an opportunity to study with wonderful instructors, meet and dance with new people, enjoy a spectacular show, and of course, escape the NC winter! Details for the Weekend of Tango in Tampa are available at Victor's Tampa Tango website.

Changes to Classes

We're making some changes to the classes in 2004. The Foundations and Intermediate Classes are being reorganized to make classes more convenient for students and help students retain material by providing more continuity from week to week. Read on for the details!

Foundations Classes will be available Mondays and Wednesdays at Triangle Dance Studio, and Fridays at the Carrboro ArtsCenter. The Monday and Wednesday classes will be changed from 6 weeks of 1hr each to the new schedule of 4 weeks of 1.5hrs each. We hope that the new timetable will make it easier for people to start exploring tango while simultaneously improving the learning experience with more continuity. Foundations Classes are not just for beginners! We encourage students of all levels to revisit Foundations Classes often to brush up on neglected skills, practice techniques in depth, and reinforce the foundations that you'll need to build your tango. If your tango mainly consists of patterns called "8-count basics" and "ochos", then you'll discover the structure and ideas that enable you to truly lead and follow improvisationally, and dance the tango so you can navigate any dance floor with any partner.

For Intermediate Classes, we're moving from a monthly subscription system to topic-based series of classes. A Series consists of 3-6 weeks of 1.25 hour classes. Each Intermediate Series will focus on a particular technique, starting with the fundamentals and then progressing through more advanced applications and refinements of the technique. The Monday and Wednesday Series will explore separate topics from each other with minimal overlap. We will explore leading and following, floorcraft, and musicality of the technique. You may elect to register for the series or for portions appropriate to your level. Students with only a month or two of tango experience, or for whom a particular technique is totally new will feel most comfortable in the first 1-2 weeks of the series. More experienced students may expect to be comfortable in weeks 1-3 and progressively challenged by material in the following weeks. The later weeks of the classes will be built upon technical foundations covered in the earlier weeks, so permission is required if you only want to register for later portions of a series. Each class is immediately followed by a supervised practice during which you can work on any material of your choosing and ask questions of the instructor.

Pricing will generally be as follows, but may change from series to series. This is only a guideline.

Monday or Wednesday Foundation Classes: 4 week series for $50. Per Class: $15 per class. Free to students in Intermediate Series or students taking 3 or more private lessons per month. Try the first class risk-free! Four students per class minimum.

Monday or Wednesday Intermediate Series: 6 week Series for $60, 5 week Series for $50, 4 week Series for $45, 3 week Series for $40. For all series, per class charges are $15, $12 for members of Triangle Tangueros or students in university or secondary school. Take two series concurrently (Monday and Wednesday), and take an additional 15% off 50% off the 2nd series. Preregister for the amounts you plan on taking, and if you take more, you'll pay the difference btwn the amount you preregistered for and the final discounted amount due. Classes taken purely on a drop-in per class basis (without preregistration) will be charged the per-class rate. Six students (or equivalent) per series minimum.

Registering for classes allows you to attend the supervised practice and additional Foundations Classes at no extra charge, and also entitles you to additional discounts and offers on other events.

Preregistration is now REQUIRED for all Intermediate Series. Drop-ins are always welcome (with permission, depending on the material), but if you want to make sure that the series will actually be held, then please preregister (or encourage others to do so ;-)...)

Mailing List Changes

There are going to be a lot of changes made in 2004, and some of them
are starting now.

One of these changes is in the organization and usage of the tangophilia
announcements list. I'm going to be moving the tangophilia
announcements list (tangophilia@yahoogroups.com) off of the Yahoo Groups
service and onto my own server. Some of my reasons are the increasing
limitations that Yahoo is placing on the Groups service, as well as
Yahoo's tendency toward more and more marketing messages to people that
don't manually opt-out of all the marketing preferences that Yahoo likes
to push.

My other reasons are to be able to provide more relevant information to
the people that want it. While some of you may want to see
announcements on everything tango related, some only want to see info on
classes, or else just music events, or just workshops. Some of you are
subscribed to multiple lists and see some duplication, while some of you
miss out on a lot because you rely only on one list. My solution is to
move the list to my own server, and to provide other lists that are more
tailored to specific interests. You can sign up for the all-inclusive
list or opt to subscribe only to those lists that are most relevant to
your interests.

If you'd like to unsubscribe from the list entirely, before I migrate,
send an empty email to tangophilia-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com before
noon on Dec 24. All email addresses still on the list after that time
will be moved to the new list
triangle-allevents-announcelist@tangophilia.com. During migration, you
may expect a few technical messages to be sent out. Hopefully, if
everything goes well, you'll only receive one or two additional
messages. After migration, you'll also be able to easily unsubscribe or
subscribe as you choose. I'll be providing detailed instructions about
managing your subscriptions once the migration is complete.
The hierarchies currently are as follows.

Local hierarchy

triangle-allevents-announcelist
This list is the most inclusive of all events of interest to local
people, including events held out-of-town. Almost all announcements
made to the other announcelists will be posted here.

triangle-classes-announcelist
For people that want to be informed only about classes offered by
Tangophilia in the Triangle.

triangle-workshops-announcelist
For people that want to be informed only about special workshops
offered by Tangophilia in the Triangle, including those by visiting
instructors. This list is ideal for people from out of town that would
consider traveling to the Triangle for workshops.

triangle-dances-announcelist
For people that want to be informed only about milongas/social dances
offered in the Triangle. This list might not be limited to just
Tangophilia events.

triangle-music-announcelist
For people that want to be informed only about live tango music offered
in the Triangle, or other events that would be of interest to fans of
the music. This list might tend to include the occasional announcement
about some non-tango music as well.

triangle-performances-announcelist
For people that want to be informed only about performances and
demonstrations by Tangophilia in the Triangle.

triangle-classes-discusslist
For people attending classes offered by Tangophilia in the Triangle
that would like to be able to discuss material presented in the classes
with fellow students or the instructor.

perworkshop-discusslist
For each special workshop, I'll create a special list for people
registered for the workshop. This will be a channel for special
announcements related to the workshop as well as a discussion channel
(for a limited time) for participants in the workshop. These lists
might be employed for 1 month prior and 1 month after a workshop.

NC hierarchy

nc-allevents-announcelist
For people around North Carolina that want to be informed only about
events held outside of the Triangle. This list may occasionally mention
events outside the state and is not necessarily limited to Tangophilia
events.

Wilmington hierarchy

wilmington-allevents-announcelist
For people that want to be informed only about tango classes and events
offered in the Wilmington area. This list will include events offered
by Tangophilia and Verna Jordan, as well as other events of tango interest.

Other

blog-announcelist@tangophilia.com
This list will receive announcements when I post updates to the blog or the photo gallery.
This list is exclusive of the other lists.

I hope you find the new lists to be helpful and informative!

Happy Holidays!
Jason
