A Weekend to Love the Tango with Alicia Pons

February 12th, 2010

Alicia Pons has arrived, and our special weekend starts tonight with a workshop and a relaxed milonga at Triangle Dance Studio (upstairs) featuring music from DJ Eduardo Lazarowski. If you have yet to see how beautiful and elegant this dancer is, please take a moment to watch Alicia Pons on Youtube.

Saturday, after our full day of workshops, come join a festive dinner and milonga at Vita. The optional dinner features a select choice of menu items including appetizer, entree, and dessert as well as a glass of wine, all for just $32 ($25 plus tax and tip). Please contact me at aliciaweekend@tangophilia.com or 330-2TANGO4 (330-282-6464) to join the dinner from 8:30-10:30. The milonga will follow the dinner and will start as soon as the tables can be cleared (hopefully as early as 10:30pm, but we may be starting closer to 11pm). The milonga is still just $10 and includes a free beverage from the bar. The music will be provided by DJ Katia Singletary.

Because Alicia will be spending a nice stretch of time with us, there are lots of opportunities for small classes and privates, so please email me with your desired dates and times between Feb 15 and Feb 24. Privates are $90 per hour (for singles or couples).

Next Saturday, Feb 20th, Tangophilia will be hosting a special event with the Free Spirits Ensemble, in the form of a Wine and Cheese Cabaret and a milonga setting at the Holly Springs Arts Center. More details coming ASAP.

Also there will be a set of follow-up workshops with Alicia Pons on Sunday Feb 21st, at Triangle Dance Studio. The topics are to be determined, but will be informed by what comes out of this weekend.

Finally, all new class series started this week! Tuesday nights include Core Techniques: Close Embrace and Explorations: Colgadas, while Wednesdays focus on Core Techniques: Milonga and Vals and Explorations: Boleos.

In upcoming travel opportunities, you might consider attending the following national events.

Friday Workshop with Alicia Pons

8:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Friday 12th February 2010
The Early Registration Deadline has passed.
Triangle Dance Studio, Durham (near RTP), NC

Put style, elegance and passion into your tango! The manner in which Alicia Pons imbues the role of the woman with verve and style has made her one of the most sought after female partners in Buenos Aires milongas.
She has a highly refined technique, and her foot play and sensual seduction are done with humor and artistry. Alicia has taught for the last several years with Cacho Dante, with whom she has frequently performed. She was trained in classical dance from an early age, and her first tango teachers were Graciela Gonzalez, whose women’s technique has shaped her precise footwork, and Tete Rusconi, one of the most renowned milongueros of his generation.
In her teaching, Alicia encourages men to lead with quiet confidence, and emphasizes the woman’s ability to not just follow, but to be an equal in the dance.

This will be Alicia’s 5th appearance in the Triangle.

Tonight is the inaugural night of a new “practilonga” hosted by four of our community’s top dancers. The evenings are held upstairs at Triangle Dance Studio, every Thursday from 7pm-9pm. The cost is just $5. The practilonga is hosted and sponsored by Katia Singletary, Cecilia Pagani, Jae Grisham, and Ellen Divers. Google Calendar Address Updated

    August 4th, 2009

If you\’ve added the Tangophilia Events calendar to your google or ical calendar, please be advised that the public address for the calendar has changed. Please update your calendars as necessary, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Tuesday Jan 20th Classes Cancelled. Wednesday Classes and Parizade still on!

    January 20th, 2009

Due to the inclement weather conditions, tonight\’s (Tuesday\’s) Foundations 1 and Intermediate Classes at Helios Annex are both cancelled. Although the snow is melting pretty rapidly, both accuweather.com and weather.com are telling me that the temp is at freezing and will rapidly drop below freezing as the sun sets.

Assuming everything clears out tomorrow, Wednesday classes will continue as scheduled.

Thursday, I\’ll be DJing at the Houston Tango Festival, and I\’m excited that there are a few more people from the Triangle attending the festival this year.

If you\’re staying in town, then on Friday, please come to the milonga at Parizade. This month\’s milonga will be hosted by Cecilia Pagani and music will be provided by DJ Katia Singletary.

Sunday the 25th, at 3pm, make a brief trip to Holly Springs Cultural Center to enjoy a concert by the Free Spirits Ensemble. It will feature the music of Astor Piazzolla and other Latin American composers, and the ensemble will be joined by guest singer Teresa Fernandez, and guest dancers John and Katia Singletary! For tickets, call (919) 567-4000. Adults $12, Seniors/Students $10, Children 12 and under free.

This past Sunday, we had our second \”tango music jam\”, hosted by Katia Singletary. It\’s a lot of fun to be exploring the music directly, so if you have any musical skills at all, please consider joining. If we\’re lucky, we\’ll start being able to have live local music at milongas!

Amalia Restucha will be hosting workshops and weekly classes taught by Facundo Posadas of Buenos Aires throughout the month of February. For details, please contact her at amalia_restucha@yahoo.com.

Further out, I will be hosting Alicia Pons April 16-23, and am making plans to host Brigitta Winkler sometime in October. Gulden Ozen will be hosting Tomas Howlin sometime in June.

    Stay warm!

Stepping up your tango in September

    September 20th, 2008

Tonight (Saturday the 20th), I\’m hosting the 3rd Saturday milonga at Helios Annex! I hope you can make it out to this cozy and relaxed venue.

Next weekend, I\’m hosting the 4th Friday Milonga at Parizade, the most elegant milonga in the Triangle, followed by the 4th Sunday Lesson and Practica, which is being relocated to my apartment on Davis Dr, just a mile south of I-40.  This will likely be the last one in the current format – I\’ll be experimenting with some changes going forward.

Details for the Weekend with Luiza and Nick, Oct 3-5, were finally posted to the website and available on fliers last week.  I\’m making it a smaller weekend, focused on the unique perspectives that Luiza and Nick bring to the tango, and I\’m trying to keep the prices a little lower to make it easier for everyone to fit it in.  I hope you can make it!

Looking ahead, I\’ll be teaching and DJing at the Atlanta Tango eXchange, Oct 17-19. I\’d love for there to be a strong representation from the Triangle at this event.

And, farther afield, I\’ll be DJing at the 10th Annual Fandango de Tango in Austin TX, Nov 26-30 AND the 2nd Annual Houston Tango Festival in Houston, TX Jan 25-29, 2009.  I\’m still sorting out my fall travel schedule, but I\’ll be letting y\’all know which other festivals I\’ll be dropping in on as well.

Tango, or tango not. There is no try.

TONIGHT: Art on The Edge (with the Old Ceremony) and Parizade

    August 22nd, 2008

I had a wonderful time dancing and DJing at the Baltimore Tango Festival. The event ran smoothly, and had a wonderfully relaxed and intimate feel. There is a photo gallery up at http://www.baltimoretangofestival.com if you\’d like to see what it was like.

A big thank you to Cecilia Pagani and Cecil Ho for hosting and DJing the Helios milonga, and for some quick thinking and improvisation that helped ensure there was something for people to drink!

TONIGHT Friday, August 22, as part of Art on the Edge, Cecilia Pagani and I will be performing tango to the music of The Old Ceremony in a show that also features aerial dancer Rebecca Drake. The show will be at Fletcher Theater in Raleigh, admission is just $10. There will be an opening comedy act (El Gleno Grande) at 7pm, and our show will be starting around 8-8:30pm. Ticket price includes both performances.

After the show, I hope everyone will join me at Parizade for the 4th Friday milonga, featuring guest DJ Eduardo Lazarowski!

    Upcoming events for your calendar:

    Don\’t stop dancing…

    Tango y Independencia

    July 11th, 2008

I hope you all had a Happy 4th of July y un feliz Nueve de Julio!

I had a terrific time at the Chicago Tango Week. It\’s a fun event, well-organized, and the teaching staff were superb. I not only had the pleasure of DJing the Closing Milonga till 4:30am Monday morning, but also was fortunate to be able to partner with Melanie Klarics of Chicago for an impromptu demonstration at the Saturday night milonga. You might want to put it on your schedule for next 4th of July weekend.

This weekend is a full one!

Tonight, I\’ll be the featured guest at Mister Diplomat at the Dirty South Improv Comedy Theater in Carrboro. The show is FREE, is apparently standing room only, and the line starts a little after 8 for the 9:30 show. Here\’s how they describe the show, \”Diplomat features true stories told by one of the performers, a local celebrity or special guest. Anecdotes inspire a world of absurd scenes, fully improvised by the most aggressive improv comedians in North Carolina.\” I\’m expecting it to be a lot of fun! After the show, I\’ll be heading straight over to ….

…Eduardo and Dan\’s milonga at Metro 8, from 9:30pm – 2am, no cover charge, but please purchase food and drink to encourage the restaurant to keep supporting tango. This milonga will be held on second Fridays through the summer, then likely go into hibernation for the fall, so don\’t miss it.

    Also this weekend…

Of course, since a lot of people, including myself, are going to be at the Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne Weekend in Atlanta July 17 – Sun July 20, I\’m going to be cancelling the 3rd Saturday Milonga at Helios Annex. However, there is an alternative event that night that you might want to attend…

Saturday, July 19th at the NC Museum of Art is a Music/Movie Combo, entitled \”Paris Dreams\”, featuring Les Primitifs du Futur, an ensemble that evokes \”the romantic sounds of pre-WWII Parisian dancehalls. It’s a magical, transporting swirl of Gypsy jazz, tango, waltz, rhumba, and other dance rhythms that will banish your every care. These wonderful musicians make beautiful traditional and original music on accordion, sax, xylophone, guitar, even the musical saw and theremin!\”. Following the music will be two classic short films of French cinema, \”The Red Balloon\” and \”The White Mane\”.

For something more literary, our local tanguero and author Lewis Shiner will be doing some signings of his new novel Black & White\"\" (LA Times Review), a page turner that deals with Durham\’s historic Hayti neighborhood. He\’ll be conducting signings tonight (July 11) at 7pm at The Regulator Bookshop on Ninth Street in Durham, Sunday 13 July at 3pm at Malaprops in Asheville, and Wednesday 23 July at 7pm at Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh. I also wanted to personally applaud and thank Lewis and his publisher, Subterranean Press, for releasing his publications online under a Creative Commons license, in DRM-free electronic formats. Bravo and congrats!

Coming up on the travel and events calendar:

Finally, for those of you that have been asking about the music in classes, I apologize for not having CDs in inventory lately, but fortunately, Amazon has started offering more and more tango music. For example, Carlos Di Sarli – RCA Victor 100 Anos\"\" is the CD that I use for all the foundations classes. Even cooler, Amazon started offering DRM-free MP3s, of great orquestas like Carlos Di Sarli\"\". Enjoy!
